Geocache Description:

Party at the Moon Tower #3
W. 41st Street and Speedway

Once a popular form of lighting in the US and Europe, Austin is now home to the only remaining moonlight towers in the world. Between 1894 and 1895 there were 31 moon towers erected in Austin. The original carbon arc lamps used illuminated a circle approximately 3,000 feet in diameter with a blue-white light (The towers now use 6,400-watt mercury vapor bulbs). Sadly, just 15 moon towers remain today. They are now designated as official state archeological landmarks and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

This is the site of the first moon tower erected in Austin. Entrepreneur Monroe Martin Shipe arranged for the moon tower to be located here on the corner of 41st Street and Speedway to light his newest real estate gamble and Austin's first planned suburb... Hyde Park.
