Trollegater är en samling grottor i Östergötland. Detta säregna område med grottsystem och sprickbildningar härrör troligen från jordbävningar då den senaste inlandsisen drog sig tillbaka för cirka 11 000 år sedan. De spänningar som den kraftiga landhöjningen då utlöste gjorde att sprickor bildades och bergblocken försköts. Både sprickorna (gatorna) ovan jord liksom väggarna i grottorna visar tydligt hur bergblocken likt pusselbitar passar till varandra. Till skillnad från flertalet kalk- och sandstensgrottor har dessa grottor således inte bildats genom erosion från kolsyrehaltigt vatten. De ytliga sprickornas skarpa kanter visar att grottorna bildats efter senaste istiden. Kanterna hade i annat fall varit rundade. Bergarten är granit som härrör från cirka 1.500 miljoner år sedan.

- Vad tros vara orsaken till den purpurröda beläggning som finns på några av väggarna i "Stora grottan" (A)?

Trollegater is a group of caves in Östergötland. This peculiar area with its caves and cracks in the bedrock was probably created by earth quakes when the last ice sheet (of the last glacial period) retracted about 11 000 years ago. The tensions that the considerable post-glacial rebound gave rise to, caused the cracks and shifted the blocks of rock. Both the cracks ("gator" = Swedish for street) above ground as well as the walls in the caves clearly show that the blocks fit each other like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. As opposed to most limestone and sandstone caves, these caves have not been formed by erosion from water with carbonic acid content. The sharp edges of the cracks near the surface show that the caves were formed after the last glacial period. Otherwise the the edges would have been rounded. The rock is made up of granite which dates back approximately 1 500 million years.

In order to log this cache you need to answer the following questions in a message to the cache owner (remember not to put your answers in the log):
- Measure the temperature inside the cave. What was it?
- How many known caves are there in the area?
- What is believed to be the cause of the red/purple deposits on some of the walls in the "Big cave" (A)?
You may also take a photo inside one of the caves and add it to the log. There are several caves of varying difficulty to choose from. You may choose any one, but it would be nice if the legend of the photo mentioned which cave it is from.
