St. John the Baptist church is in the village of Great Clacton and
the oldest building in what is now a suburb of Clacton-on-Sea.
There is a gate to the Churchyard open during daylight hours. If it
is shut, then walk around to the church via the shops.
There has probably been a church building on this site since the
earliest days of Christianity in Essex. In 653 AD, Penda, the
heathen King of Mercia allowed four Christian priests into his
territory. One of those priests (Cedd) was shortly afterwards
transferred to work amongst the East Anglians. He became a Bishop
and may well have built a small church here. The thick walls of the
nave of the present building contain materials from older
buildings. The churchyard was surrounded by cornfields upto the
1950s. The chancel is Norman with the tower being built 100 years
later. There are 5 ancient bells, 2 of which cast in 1649. In
November 1986 the church was closed due to plaster falling from the
nave. It remained closed until the new millennium. Following a 4
year appeal (which ended on 23rd March 2003), over £500,000 had
been raised.
To find the cache you will need to do a bit of snooping.
