A traditional cache that will take you on an easy 2.4km (round
trip) walk in the scenic Jonkershoek valley - a relaxed walk should
get you there and back in ~45min.
The scenic Jonkershoek Nature Reserve close to Stellenbosch
is popular with day hikers and mountain bikers. A circular drive of
~10km will take you around the valley floor while five hiking
trails of varying difficulty and length lead off this road into the
mountains. The Watervalle trail, which starts close to the
extreme end of the loop, is probably the most popular because it
offers a relative easy walk and magnificent scenery. Eerste
Waterval is approximately 1.2km from the trailhead and
Tweede Waterval is a further ~1.8km on (with the cache
Tweede Waterval Redux). This trail is well worth the effort,
especially during winter and early spring when the waterfalls have
plenty of water and the fynbos is flowering.
This cache is hidden close to Eerste Waterval - just follow
the trail until it ends on a huge boulder overlooking the bottom
cascade of the waterfall. GPS reception is bad at GZ and the cache
is about the location, so we’ll make the hint fairly
descriptive. Approach the last 10m to the cache with caution as the
rocks will most probably be wet and slippery. Only one specific
rock was chosen to cover the cache, please replace it with the same
care and do not cover with a pile of rocks.
For more detail on the trail you can look at this track log
and for more information on the other trails you can download the
Jonkershoek map. The entrance fee to the reserve is R30 p.p. if
you do not have a Wild Card and the reserve is open between 07:30
and 18:00 (winter and summer).
Happy caching!
