Geocache Description:

A Short Multi-Cache set around the old & new Parish Churches in Greatham. Yep - BOGOF – Buy One Get One Free, a double value Church Micro. Sadly, you can’t log it twice though!

Allow about 20 minutes or so for this cache.

Greatham (which is pronounced "Grettam") is a small village, about 6 miles north of Petersfield, Hampshire, 10 miles south of Farnham, Surrey and 8 miles east of Alton, Hampshire. The village is situated alongside the A3 which runs between London and Portsmouth.

Greatham is a linear village, mainly located along the old Petersfield Road (the main road between Farnham and Petersfield), with additional housing along Longmoor Road, Benhams Lane and Church Lane. The population of Greatham is just over 800 people living in around 400 houses.

At the north end of the village is Longmoor Military Camp, where remains of the Longmoor Military Railway can be seen, and the new Woolmer Link road, re-routing the A325 from Farnham to join the A3 at Longmoor Camp, by-passing the village.

In the middle of the village is the The Greatham Inn, the village's only public house, opposite the relatively-new "Todmore" housing estate.

Towards the south end of the village is the Old Church, which dates back to the 13th century. The only remaining part of this church is the chancel, which includes a tomb of some historical value. The present church, the Church of St. John the Baptist, was built in 1875, and lies opposite the Old Church.

Now onto the cache itself :

Begin at the new Church of St John the Baptist at the co-ordinates above, have a sit down and survey the churchyard. Whilst you are there find the dates ABCD – EFGH for Augustus Coryton.

Next go to the Lych gate. Here you will find its date of construction JKLM and a Latin inscription. How many letters in the first word = P? How many letters in the second word = Q? Extra points if you can translate the Latin.

Now carefully cross the road to the old Church. In approximately what year was it built = RSTU? And finally how many windows are there in the Chancel = W?

The Camouflaged Micro cache can be found at short distance away at :

If anybody would like to expand this Church Micro series, please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
