No dia 17 de Maio de 2008 foi inaugurado o Museu de
Portimão. Este museu situa-se na antiga fábrica conserveira Feu
Hermanos, cujo edifício é datado dos finais do séc. XIX, e mostra o
património histórico, etnográfico e industrial da cidade e região.
Na visita ao museu faz-se uma viagem às raízes do concelho de
Portimão. Recua-se até à pré-história para ver o modo de vida em
Alcalar, passando por romanos e mouros e avançando nos séculos até
chegar à época de Manuel Teixeira Gomes. E porque duma antiga
fábrica conserveira se trata, é possível também conhecer todos os
passos, desde a chegada do peixe até ao fecho das latas. A entrada
no Museu faz-se pelo lado do rio Arade, onde se descarregava o
peixe, que era levado para a sala de descabeço - o
“coração” da antiga fábrica. Aí foram restaurados os
mecanismos do sistema de lavagem e de transporte e os tanques de
salmoura e colocadas figuras a representarem os conserveiros. Na
nave central encontra-se ainda uma imponente máquina que fazia a
impressão em chapas de metal. Na antiga cisterna da fábrica, onde
se recolhiam e aproveitavam as águas pluviais, é possível ver
imagens em movimento da fauna e flora subaquáticas do Rio Arade e
da orla costeira, junto a Portimão. Mostram-se também peças
subaquáticas – canhões e ânforas.
Em Novembro de 2009, o espaço recebeu uma menção
honrosa respeitante ao «Prémio Melhor Museu Português» e em
Dezembro o Conselho da Europa distinguiu o equipamento com o
«Prémio Museu do Ano 2010».

The museum of Portimão was inaugurated on 17th May
2008. This museum is situated in the old Feu Hermano factory of
tinned food whose building dates back from the late 19th century
and shows the historic, ethnographic and industrial patrimony of
the town and region. By visiting the museum, we can learn about the
origin of the Portimão council. We go back to the pre-historic age
to be familiar with the way of living in Alcalar, from the time of
the romans and arabs until the epoch of Teixeira Gomes. It is also
possible to get to know all the necessary steps from the arrival of
the fish until the closing of the tins. The entry of the museum is
situated by Arade river near the place where fish was unloaded and
later taken to the “heart” of the factory – the
room where fish heads were taken away. The old mechanisms for the
transport and washing system and brine tanks were restored in that
room and figures have been placed there representing the old
factory workers. In the central room we can find an impressive
machine which was used for the printing on metal sheets. In the old
tank of the factory, which was used for the storage of the rain
waters, it is possible to see moving images of the aquatic plants
and animals living in the river Arade as well as of the coastal
area around Portimão. Some aquatic objects such as cannons and
amphoras can also be found there.
In November 2009 this building was distinguished
with an honorable mention for being the Best Portuguese Museum and
in December it was awarded the prize “Best Museum of the Year
2010” by the European Council.
