This is the 14th Geocache from Team Family Affair. This cache is located about a 2 miles North West of the “Modern Ghost Town” of Rockerville, and is a relatively easy uphill hike to a spectacular view of the surrounding area. The view includes Rapid City to the East. Looking beyond Rapid City to the NorthEast is a great view of Ellsworth Air Force Base. If you look to the horizon past Rapid City and Rapid Valley you can see the cliffs along the Cheyenne river and the Badlands of South Dakota. If you turn around and look to the SouthWest you can see Harney Peak towering high in the distance at a elevation of 7133 Feet. Bring your binoculars as it is truly a great view and this cache is just minutes away from Rapid City.
History and Information about the area:
This trail will lead you to the top of Boulder Hill where there was a Fire Lookout Tower. All that remains of the Tower is the foundation, as the Forest Service abandoned and then later removed it quite a few years ago. The foundation is located on the way to the cache at N 43 57.704 W 103 23.891.
How to get there:
The easiest access to the Boulder Hill area is from Highway 16 between Rapid City and Keystone. Just west of Rockerville turn North on Silver Mountain Road (N 43 56.535 W 103 23.733). Drive a short distance and then turn onto the gravel road (Boulder Hill Road) at coordinates (N 43 56.738 W 103 23.620). Drive along the gravel road until you reach the base of Boulder Hill and park your car at N 43 57.515 W 103 24.071. Begin your hike here! Don’t forget your binoculars
The cache is an ammo can painted and camouflaged to look like a rock, with Geocaching.com stenciled on the side. This is a area is popular with all kinds of hikers so after signing the log, please make sure you leave the cache WELL HIDDEN.
