Geocache Description:


Nope, I'm not talking about the grape juice. Welch is my Mothers maiden name. This parking lot and surrounding structures are located on the same spot where she grew up.

Back around 1960, my grandparents moved into a house on this location. The address was 1312 N. Concord. The lot looked much different back then. Obviously, the parking lot and structures were not here and the creek didn't run underground like it does now, so it split the property into two sections. Their house sat right in front of a retaining wall where the blacktop path that leads up to the biking bridge is now.

When they bought the house, they were told that it was already over 100 years old. The woman that sold it to them, Claimed it had once been used as a hideout by Jesse James.

My grandparents raised 9 kids in this house. While the kids were growing up, my Grandma stayed at home but later she went to work for Whirlpool corporation.



My Grandpa worked down in the So. St. Paul stockyards at Swifts meat packing company. He worked there until they closed. He did have to take a year off for medical recovery after a side of beef fell on him and broke his back. After Swifts closed my Grandparents moved the family out to Arizona where they found work as sharecroppers. After about a year, they moved back here and my Grandpa went to work for Pinkerton security, working as a security guard at the Koch refinery.

You may have noticed my Grandma's dark complexion. She is a full blooded Mohican of the Stockbridge-Munsee tribe.

I spent a lot of time at my Grandparents, during the summer, playing in the valley and down by the railyard. I actually lived here for a short time while my parents were house hunting.



In the above picture, the yard is full of mud. It wasn't always like that. they actually had a nice lawn. When this picture was taken, Butler avenue ended at Stickney Ave. The city was working on extending it down to Concord, so they had to level out some of the hills and gulleys on the north side of the valley. During the construction, a heavy rain came and washed all the loose dirt down the valley and into my Grandparents yard.

In the mid to late 80's the city had notified my Grandparents of their interest in buying their property to put in a park. Around 1988, my Grandparents decided to sell the property and move back to Wisconsin.

I should add that my Grandparents house was not the only house in this spot. If you can believe it, there were actually four houses here. The house on the south end of the area was owned by Lee Karg, he ran an auto body repair shop out of his garage. The creek seperated his property from the other three houses. The second house was owned Adolph and Mary Vavro. They ran a music and dance studio in So. St. Paul The third house was owned by Don Nelson. And the house on the north end was my Grandparents.

At the first stage coordinates, there is a native american metal sculpture. To get the coordinates of the physical cache, you'll need to observe some details about the sculpture.

B=# of feathers inside 1 of the 2 large circles, including the feather at the top center of the circle.
C=second digit of the year that is engraved onto the sculpture in 4 digit format.
X= of circles on the pants of the indian on the north side of the sculpture, minus 1.
Y=# of indians, multiplied by 2.
Z=# of TP's

The cache is a plastic peanut butter jar.
