Park at the small parking lot behind the stores of the nearby strip
mall and take the portage path down to Cliff Lake. The cache isn't
too far from this point. The portage path was constructed by an
Eagle Scout as a service project needed to earn the Eagle rank.
This cache is part of the "Cache to Eagle" series highlighting
service projects conducted by Eagle Scout candidates. This series
highligts Eagle Scout service projects in Chief Black Dog District
of Northern Star Council, BSA. The Chief Black Dog District
includes scout troops in the communities of Apple Valley, Eagan,
and Burnsville. This particular Eagle Scout service project was
conducted in the late sping of 2009 by a Boy Scout from Troop 510.
The project involved assemblng and directing a work crew which
removed trees and buckthorn under direction of the city of Eagan to
form a portage path. The portage path was completed by hauling and
spreading wood chips onto the path. The project took over 100 hours
to complete. The City of Eagan agreed to conduct annual upkeep,
which includes placing new chips on the path. As a result of this
project, people can now easily portage a canoe from a nearby
parking lot situated behind the stores of a strip mall to Cliff
Lake.
Each of the twelve "Cache to Eagle" series caches for the Chief
Black Dog District have a designated code word associated with the
cache. Generally, the code word will be within the cache (such as
written or taped to the lid). The code word is one of the twelve
points of the Scout Law.
