Die Kühlung ist ein bewaldeter Höhenzug in Mecklenburg Vorpommern und ein Teil des Baltischen Landrücken. In Deutschland sagt man auch Nördlicher Landrücken zu der 200 Kilometer breiten Moränen-Hügelkette. Die Kühlung selbst ist ca. 11 Kilometer lang und 2-3 Kilometer breit. Die höchste Erhebung der Kühlung ist der Diedrichshagener Berg mit ca. 130 Metern.
Die Bezeichnung "Kühlung" kommt aber nicht vom "kühlen", sondern leitet sich aus dem Wort "Kuhlen" ab, bezugnehmend auf die starken Zerklüftungen dieses Gebietes.
Diese Hügellandschaft entstand während der letzten Weichsel-Eiszeit vor ca. 16.000 Jahren und gehört damit zur Endmoräne der Weichselvereisung. Viele Findlinge sind heute noch Zeitzeugen der damaligen Eiszeit. Die bekanntesten Findlinge sind der "Elefantenstein" und die "Schildkröte" in Rerik. Nach dem sich das Eis zurück gezogen hatte begann eine Wiederbesiedlung durch Tiere und Pflanzen und damit einher gingen verschiedene Siedlungswellen von Jäger- und Sammlerkulturen. Großsteingräber, Gang- und Hünengräber und Groß- und Urdolmen sind heute die Zeitzeugen der damaligen Zeit. Viele dieser Gräber wurden als Naturdenkmale erhalten und prägen heute die Kühlung.

Info´s zur Weichsel-Eiszeit

Eiszeiten sind Perioden in der Erdgeschichte in denen große Gebiete der Erde ganzjährig mit Eis bedeckt waren. Im Laufe der Geschichte traten mehrere Eiszeiten auf, eine davon war die Weichseleiszeit.
Die Weichseleiszeit, oder auch Weichselglazial bezeichnet, ist die jüngste in Nord- und Mitteleuropa aufgetretene eiszeitliche Vergletscherung, die bis tief in die norddeutsche Tiefebene reichte. Sie war der dritte und letzte Zeitabschnitt der eiszeitlichen Vergletscherungen. Sie begann vor ca. 117.000 Jahren und verdrängte dabei wärmeliebende Waldgesellschaften bis weit in die norddeutsche Tiefebene hinein. Als Namensgeber fungierte die Weichsel, ein Fluss in Polen der in der Ostsee mündet.
Das Ende der Weichseleiszeit begann mit einem abrupten Temperaturanstieg und dem damit verbundenen etappenweisen Rückzug des Eises Richtung Norden vor ca. 11.560 Jahren. Der vorher stark gesunkene Meeresspiegel stieg wieder an und durch ein kompliziertes Wechselspiel zwischen Eisstauseen und Meeresvorstößen bildete sich über verschiedene Stadien die heutige Ostsee.

The "Kühlung" is a wooded ridge in Mecklenburg Vorpommern and part of the Baltic country back. In Germany said to be northern country back to the 200-kilometer-wide moraine hills. The "Kühlung" itself is about 11 km long and 2-3 km wide. The highest point of the “Kühlung” is the Diedrichshagener Berg with about 130 meters.
The term "Kühlung" comes not from "cooling", but derives from the word "Kuhlen" referring to the strong fissures in this region.
These hills has been formed during the last Weichselian ice age about 16,000 years ago and is one of the terminal moraine of the Weichsel glaciation.Many erratic blocks are today dumb witness of this time period. The most known of these are the "Elefantenstein" and the "Schildkröte" in the small village Rerik. After retreat of the ice a resettling was started by plants and animals. Along with this followed several settlements episodes of hunter-gatherers. Megalithic tombs, passage graves, hill graves and Grossdolmen are archaeological evidences for these facts. Many of these graves have been maintain as natural monuments and denote the "Kühlung" today.

Info's on the Weichsel Ice Age

Ice ages are periods in Earth history in which large areas of the earth were covered with ice year-round. Throughout history occurred several ice ages, one of which was the Weichsel ice age. The Weichsel Ice Age or Weichselian called is the latest in Northern and Central Europe occurred Ice Age glaciation, which reached deep into the North German Plain. It was the third and final period of the ice age glaciations. It began approximately 117,000 years ago and drove it thermophile forest communities far into the North German Plain. As namesake served the Weichsel river in Poland one which flows into the Baltic Sea.
The end of the Weichsel ice age began with an abrupt temperature rise and the resulting stepwise retreat of the ice about 11,560 years ago to the north. The previously sharp fall in sea level rose again and by a complex interplay of Ice Lake and marine incursions formed over various stages of today's Baltic Sea.
