Geocache Description:

On May 2nd 2000, geocaching was made possible when selective availability was removed from the GPS Satellite signals. The first geocache was placed on the very next day, and this cache is named to celebrate that anniversary of our hobby.

The cache is a round three-inch lock 'n lock container. Please be sure to PLACE THE ROCK ON TOP OF THE CACHE--the container has been known to escape its hiding place, and has been found out in the open.

This multi-acre park in Hillsdale, New Jersey is called The Sapienza Gardens, and is named for Barbara Sapienza, who was the principal of Pascack Valley High School. During January, 2008the school district announced that Dr. Sapienza had become comatose after knee surgery. She died in March of that year.

The park was officially opened on April 25, 2009 and since then, there have been several “clean-up” days. Bird watching events are held and there are plans to create gardens for specific purposes.

The cache is approximately 0.25 mile from the recommended entry. The path through the woods is wide and friendly with little elevation gain. Because the park is relatively new, I am unable to say yet whether muggles will be a problem--so far, I would say not.

Recommended entry is at the eastern end of St. Nicholas Avenue, Hillsdale, NJ.
