Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of internationally placed caches to honour renowned mountaineer Conrad Kain.

About this Cache Area...

From this viewpoint, you are looking into the heart of the Purcell Range, where its loftiest peaks rise. The distinctive Farnham Tower the northernmost rampart of the range’s highest mountain, Mount Farnham (3457m), is visible on the horizon. Both mountains were first climbed by Conrad Kain and clients Albert H. and Bess MacCarthy in 1914.

Conrad Kain (1883-1934) was an Austrian-born mountain guide who lived in the nearby hamlet of Wilmer, as did the MacCarthys. During his career, he guided first ascents on many of the Purcell Range’s highest and most difficult peaks. Whenever he reached the summit of a previously unclimbed mountain, he built a rock cairn (similar to the one at this site), leaving an astonishing legacy of 69 such cairns in Canada, 29 in New Zealand and three in Corsica.
