Bronze Bonus Cache in Skidaway Island State Park Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: “Georgia State Parks has decided to archive all of the existing caches on their current GeoTour. They will be launching a new updated GeoTour, that will be going live Monday February, 8th.

If you are still completing the old system, have no fear, you can still complete our old GeoTour while starting our new one. The stamps are no longer in the caches, however we printed out the corresponding letters and pasted them inside the new geocache boxes. Write these letters down on your old passport and email a picture to ParksRFun@dnr.ga.gov to receive the coins for the old GeoTour.”

Cache Description:

This "Bronze Bonus Cache" is for those who have already found any 15 of the qualifying Georgia State Park GeoTour caches. Access to this cache is tidal dependent and plan around low tide or within two hours of low tide to access this cache. To view the Tidal Chart click here and indicate the time of year you plan on visiting as well as Skidaway Island at Delegal Creek.

Located near historic Savannah, this park borders Skidaway Narrows, a part of Georgia's intracoastal waterway. The park provides camping and picnicking surrounded by Spanish moss-draped live oaks. Trails wind through maritime forest and over salt marsh allowing visitors to watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets and migrating birds such as colorful painted buntings.

Before the bridge, people came to Skidaway Island via the ferry hence the name of the trail you just traversed, Big Ferry Trail. The coordinates will lead you very near the ferry landing which carried people across the Skidaway Narrows to Long Island and then via a separate ferry to the mainland.

When you arrive at the posted coordinates, you will find a tallish structure. Count the number of steps from level 1 to level 2. Call your answer “A”. Also, count the number of round, telephone pole vertical support structures. Call your answer “B”. You need to travel a distance of 656 - A feet on an azimuth of (50 x B)-11 degrees (true north).

Here you will find a plant on the ground that may surprise you if you are not familiar with the area. Hint: The singular form of this plant has one more letter than the plural form. The singular form of the word has how many letters? Call your answer “C”. The plural form has how many letters? Call your answer “D”. You need to travel a distance of 186 - C feet on an azimuth of (60 X D) - 3 degrees (true north).

You can use your GPSr to project your waypoints or go at it with compass and pace count. Either way, you should find the cache at the end of your endeavors.

Skidaway Island State Park is part of Georgia’s Colonial Coast Birding Trail (website: http://www.georgiawildlife.com/node/1356 ). Geocachers are encouraged to see the wildlife (birds included) out on the park’s Big Ferry Trail. Grab a park map and just follow your GPS receiver. You should expect to see tidal marsh, dense groves of trees heavily draped in Spanish moss, and the intercoastal waterway. If you see something unique, please tell us about it and your adventure in your log. The cache is regular sized and should fit most trade items – remember to leave something if you take something. The trail is generally flat but accessibility varies with the tides.

Georgia State Parks GeoTour:

Geocaching is an outdoor adventure game similar to a treasure hunt played with a GPS device. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, take a trinket from the cache, leave something of greater or equal value in return for the next person and then share your experiences online. There are over a million active geocaches around the world and now with the Georgia State Parks GeoTour you can “Get Out. Get Dirty. Get Fit.“ and go geocaching in Georgia state parks.

Steps to the Georgia State Parks GeoTour:

1. Obtain a Georgia State Park GeoTour PassPort from any park or historic site or download a PDF from GaParksGeocaching.com

2. Go to Geocaching.com create a log-in and find the GPS coordinates and more information for the Georgia State Parks GeoTour locations.

3. Start your search and locate one or all caches using a hand-held GPS unit. The cache containers are sealed ammo boxes labeled as a Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites geocache. Caches are located in 42 Georgia state parks and state historic parks.

4. When you find a GeoTour cache, log your name and any comments on the logbook inside the cache and stamp your PassPort grid sheet with the unique stamp for that specific park.

5. Be sure to follow the Leave No Trace guidelines – GeorgiaStateParks.org/LeaveNoTrace

6. Follow the Traveling Gophers. There are 58 Georgia State Park & Historic Sites TravelBugs® moving around the country. Be on the lookout for them and help them get to a new destination.
7. If you’re quick, there is a “First-to-Find” special prize.

8. Find one of the “endangered” gopher stuffed toys in 10 of the caches and it’s yours to keep and protect.

9. Complete specific numbers of caches to get a custom Geo-Coin. Bring your stamped PassPort into the park’s Visitor Center and receive a voucher for your coin.

With 15 completed caches you are eligible for a bronze level coin
With 30 completed caches you are eligible for a silver level coin

Disclaimer to New Geocachers:
Please join us in playing! All are welcome who observe and obey the rules. Please do not move or vandalize the container. Replace the cache like or better than you found it and when you leave, and make sure the cache is completely covered. Please do not remove the rubber stamp from the ammo can, this is a essential game piece for cachers accepting the GeoTour. The real treasure is just finding the container and sharing your thoughts with everyone who finds it. Pick up a GeoTour Passport at any Park Visitor Center.
