Flyttblock i Keillers park / Erratic Block in Keillers Park

Detta är en EarthCache som är placerad vid ett stort flyttblock i Keillers Park.

This is an EarthCache that is place by a large erratic block in Keillers Park.

Keillers park är en stor park i centrala Göteborg och ägdes fram till år 1906 av James Keiller som hade ärvt den av sin far Alexander Keiller. James donerade området till Göteborg Stad och den 3 oktober 1908 invigdes parken. Parken är designad i nationalromantisk stil till stora delar av Eugen Thorburn. Eugen har även ritat Kungsportsbron som även den ligger i centrala Göteborg.

Ramberget som Keillers park befinner sig på fick sin form under istiden för 12 000 år sedan och består till stora delar av röd Göteborgsgnejs. I öster består stora delar av berget av ögongnejs. Inlandsisen drog fram från nordost till sydväst och det är därifrån detta flyttblock har slitits loss. Gnejs är en så kallad metamorf bergart som har bildats under högt tryck och temperaturatur.

Flyttblocket som denna EarthCache pekar ut har blivit vitmålat så att bilister inte skall köra in i det då de beger sig upp och ner till Rambergets topp.


För att logga denna EarthCache måste du besvara några frågor:
1. Gnejs kan användas som byggnadsmaterial. Ge exempel på två andra byggnadsstenar som används som byggnadsmaterial i Sverige.
2. I Sverige har varje landskap en landskapssten. Västra Götaland har platådiabas. Vilket landskap har ögongnejs som landskapssten?
3. Vad är flyttblockets största horisontella omkrets? (OBS! Glöm inte att ta med dig ett snöre eller måttband så du kan mäta omkretsen på stenen.)
4. Jag blir väldigt glada om du vill ta en bild på dig själv och din GPS vid flyttblocket och lägga till den i den logg.

Keillers park is a large park in the center of Gothenburg and was owned until 1906 by James Keiller that had inherited it from his father Alexander Keiller. James donated the area to Göteborg Stad and on the 3 of October 1908 the park was opened. The park is designed in national romantic style to large extent of Eugen Thorburn. Eugen has also designed Kungsportsbron that is also situated in the center of Gothenburg.

Ramberget that Keillers park is situated on got its shape during the ice age about 12 000 years ago and consist to large parts of Göteborgsgnejs (Gothenburg gneiss). In the East the mountain consist of large part of ögongnejs - (augen gneiss). The inland ice came from the North East and went to the South West and it is from that the erratic block has been ripped from. Gneiss is a so called metamorphic rock that has been created under a high amount of pressure and temperature.

The erratic block has been painted white so that cars will not drive into it on their way up and down to the top of Ramberget.


To be able to log this EarthCache you need to answer some questions:
1. Gneiss can be used as building materiel. Give two examples of other rocks that are used as building materiel in Sweden.
2. In Sweden every province have their own province stone. Västra Götaland has plateau diabase as theirs. Which province has augen gneiss (ögongnejs) as province stone?
3. What is the maximum horizontal circumference of erratic block? (Do not forget to bring a string or a tape measure to be able to measure the diameter of the stone.)
4. I would be very happy if you want to take a picture of yourself with your GPS by the erratic block and add it to your log.
