Sacajawea
("Bird Woman")
This cache was placed on what is estimated to be Sacajawea's birthday: April 6, 1788 (actual birthdate is unknown). Sacagawea was a Shoshone Indian who traveled with the Lewis and Clark expedition from 1804-1806.
Sacagawea was captured in 1800 by the Hidatsa indians and later sold to a French-Canadian trader named Toussaint Charbonneau, who served as the guide on the expedition. The only woman in the party, she also carried with her an infant son, Jean Baptiste (nicknamed "Pompy" which means "First Born"). She spoke both Shoshani and Hidatsa which proved invaluable to the explorers as she traveled with them all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
