Geocache Description:

Cache is in the Hook Natural Area, one of the most beautiful parts of Bald Eagle State Forest. The hike in is very steep and rocky and the trails are all very rocky.

The way we intend the cache hunt is to start off on Old Shingle Road and head down Molasses Gap Trail into the natural area. Head to the left at the bottom of the (very steep and rocky) trail and you will cross a bridge. You are very close at that point. We recommend continuing on Molasses Gap all the way to Jones Mountain. Road and left around to Mule Shanty Trail.
The total hike is 4 miles with about 1100 vertical feet of climbing. The terrain is extremely varied and beautiful mixing between fern covered groves, mossy rocks, dark pine forest, and huge Rhododendron. This is definitely one of the most beautiful areas I have seen in Bald Eagle. For a continued adventure, continue down the North Branch of Buffalo creek to the Mifflinburg Reservoir. Note that the State Forest map (you will really want one!) in this area isn’t accurate at all. Mule shanty trail really continues right along Panther Run and meets Molasses Gap right where Middle Ridge branches off, not earlier as the map shows.
