Geocache Description:

This cache hunt brings you to the National Historic Landmark of Locust Grove, the country estate of Samuel F. B. Morse on the banks of the Hudson. The Visitor Center is open every day from 10 to 5, and the grounds are open 8AM until dusk, weather permitting. Please note there are no dogs allowed on the property, sorry.

Please enter at the visitor center where you will receive a wristband. There is no charge for hiking the grounds but this is needed for them to attain accurate records of visitation. The trails will be closed from November 18 to December 2 for deer hunting season. This is a safety precaution as there is no hunting allowed on Locust Grove property.

I highly recommend planning a day of this one and before the hike taking the tour of the house, a visit through the gallery and informative video, it really brings the whole place to life once you get down on the trails in the Nature Preserve. During November,December, March and April the house is open for tours, by appointment only, from 10am until 4pm. The visitor center and grounds remain open during these times except where noted above. If your driving a bit to get here there are a couple other close by caches and if the historic estate scene is what your in to today the Mid-Hudson Valley is full of them.

Please respect the Nature Preserve and stay on the trails. There are erosion problems on some of the steeper banks, please stay away from them. There will be no need to climb any steep banks to reach the cache. The cache is approximately 50 yds off the trail, in an area with minimal undergrowth, no bushwacking necessary. The cache is hidden in a 50 cal ammo can clearly marked.

This cache started with a Travel Bug inside, the great Samuel F.B. Morse himself.... well an inanimate replacement anyways, Mr. Morse is on a quest to learn as much as he can about this new information age that he inspired more than a century ago. What better way then to jump in a cache and see where it takes him. He is collecting data for this study and would like for you to jot down in his journal how the communication era impacts your life. Please keep him moving along as he is eager to start his studies, he's been resting at Locust Grove too long and is eager to hear all he's missed. The man needs data to interpret!

I hope you enjoy your visit to Locust Grove and explore the historical signifigance and beautiful trails that lead to the Hudson with views of the Mid Hudson Bridge.
