St Mary the Virgin, Swanage – this church has evolved over
the centuries. The main part dates from 1860, but the tower itself
is from the fourteenth century.
Inside, the east window and the Creation window are fine
examples from the mid- and late-twentieth century.
Swanage is a busy town and this church finds itself on one side,
along a busy road and on the other, amongst some of the older and
quieter parts of the town.
The river which runs past the main entrance flows through the
town, under the streets and shops before finding its way to the
seafront. But the sound of water one hears near the church comes
from the nearby Mill Pond. This popular location offers the visitor
the chance to experience a period of tranquillity, broken only by
the sound of ducks which surely demand a crumb or two!
There have been no recordings of tragedy at this pond, but
children should be supervised and adults dissuaded from walking
along its walls!
To find the cache, first find a memorial, ‘In memory of
Thomas Tatchell – Died June AB CDEF’
The cache may be found without the need to climb any steps near
the church, although there is a short walk up a small hill.
