A Praia da Rocha
(antigamente também chamada de Praia de Santa Catarina) é uma das
mais famosas do Algarve, senão mesmo de todo o país. Todos os anos,
durante o Verão, a praia enche-se de turistas vindos de todo o
mundo. O seu nome fica a dever-se às rochas que se encontram entre
o areal e o mar.
Em 1894, Julião Lourenço Pinto faz uma das primeiras descrições da
"singular e pitoresca praia, como certamente não há outra no país
em equivalência de encantos e em condições hidrográficas tão
vantajosas". Em 1 de Agosto de 1910 abre o Casino da Praia da Rocha
sintoma da crescente afluência de gente a esta estância, marcando
uma fase de melhoramentos contínuos que vão atrair aqui a
aristocracia do sul do País e da Andaluzia. O lugar povoa-se assim
de casas e chalets onde se acolhem numerosos turistas e é também
construído o primeiro hotel, o Hotel Viola, que se situava onde
hoje se encontra o Rocha Hotel Apartamento.
Actualmente, junto à praia, existe uma grande variedade de
restaurantes e bares que atrai um grande número de turistas, tanto
de dia, como de noite. Desde 2005 tem recebido o Mundialito de
Futebol de Praia.

Praia da
Rocha (formerly called Praia de Santa Catarina) is one of the
most famous beaches in Algarve. Every year, during summer, the
beach fills up with tourists from around the world. Its name is due
to the rocks that lie between the beach and the sea.
In 1894, Julião Lourenço Pinto made one of the first descriptions
of the "quaint and picturesque beach, as certainly there is no
other equivalent in the country in beauty and favourable river
conditions". In August 1, 1910 the Casino of Praia da Rocha opened,
as a symptom of the growing influx of people to this resort,
marking a phase of continuous improvements that attracted the
southern aristocracy of Portugal and Andaluzia. Thus new houses and
chalets were built which hosted many tourists, as well as the first
hotel, Hotel Viola, that stood where lies Rocha Hotel Apartaments
today.
Nowadays, next to the beach, there is a wide variety of restaurants
and bars attracting a large number of tourists, both day and night.
Since 2005 Praia da Rocha helds the Beach Football World
Cup.
