Geocache Description:

There's no place like home...

The club was established in 1893 as Headington United. They changed their name to Oxford United in 1960 to raise the profile of the club.

In 1926 as Headington United, the club moved in to The Manor Ground during which time they enjoyed such highs as winning the 1962 Southern League title which resulted in their election in to the football league, numerous promotions including that to the top flight in 84/85 season and of course the famous Milk Cup victory over QPR at Wembley in 1986.

In 2001 Oxford left their beloved home and moved in to The Kassam Stadium, after which the club's fortunes suffered and they spent four long and hard years in non-league football, finally regaining their place back in the league with a 3-1 Play-off final win over York City at Wembley in front of an incredible 33k Oxford fans.

Sadly, The Manor Ground has been knocked down allowing for further expansion of the John Radcliffe Hospital.

This cache takes you on a little tour of the old Manor Ground and then on to Oxford's new home.

We hope you enjoy the cache whether you're an Oxford fan or not!

PARKING: Please note the majority of parking in this area of Headington is for permit holders only but there are some spaces that provide free parking for 2 hours. A recommended spot is available as an additional waypoint. Please respect any restrictions in place.

Parking at the final GZ should be much easier assuming its not on a match day near to kick off.

==========================================

The Manor Ground had four main terraces, the initial part of this cache has you finding clues on each of the main roads/paths on which these terraces were built.

The above co-ordinates are for stage one. On BEECH ROAD (home family terrace) near the main entrance of the Manor Hospital, there is a green electricity/BT box. Please note the number on the side. This is ABCDE.

Spin round and walk back down Beech Road and turn right on to Sandfield Road. Follow the road for a short distance and turn right again on to the footpath that runs parallel to the entrance of the JRs Arthur Sanctury House/Sandfield Day Nursery. This is CUCKOO LANE (away terrace).

Whilst on Cuckoo Lane, note the telephone number on the JR sign on David Edwards Way. This is 0800 FGH I JKL

Carry on down Cuckoo Lane and turn right.

On OSLER ROAD (home terrace/away seating) note the two digits on the Yellow H sign by the Bowling Green. This is MN

Carry on down Osler Road and turn right.

On LONDON ROAD (vocal home terrace) with your back to the Supplies Entrance to the Manor Hospital, note the number on the lampost on the opposite side of the road. This is OP

The co-rds of the cache are:

N51.A(H-G).CMP W001.(N+3).E(F+G)(J+K)

Having calculated the co-ords, carry on down London Road, turning right back in to Sandfield Road and then right again in to Beech Road and back to your parking.

PLEASE REPLACE THE CACHE AS FOUND. This is extremely important in this instance as the area has a high muggle count and see's a lot of activity. It may be advisable to avoid attempting this in the build up to, and just after the end of, a home match as road traffic is extremely heavy.

WE ARE THE LEFT SIDE!!!
