Geocache Description:

Parking in Holbrook is the biggest challenge for this cache. Take care crossing the road.

This beautiful and unusual church dates from 1761 when a chapel was built for the use of Bradshaw family, the then owners of Holbrook Hall. The villagers started to use the chapel instead of walking across the fields to Duffield.

In 1829 a perpetual curate was appointed and in 1835 the chapel was consecrated as St Michael’s Parish Church. It was not until 1863, though, that the first weddings took place, the tradition of going to Duffield obviously was still strong.

In 1840 the church was extended to the west and north and in 1887 the vestry was added on the north side of the building.

In 1907 a fire caused serious damage and as part of the rebuilding programme the decision was taken to add a new aisle on the south side of the church. The chancel was extended to the east at the same time and the circular window moved to the west end of the south aisle. The fine semi-circular window was filled with its lovely stained glass in 1930. The oak panelling was added at various stages of the 20th century and the south aisle was screened off in 1997 to form a separate meeting room.

The church’s registers and service books record our long history of Christian witness and can now be examined in the county’s archives at Matlock where they have been stored for safe keeping, professional advice and easier access.

The cache is located in some woods behind the church. Just follow the path through the churchyard.
