Dunn's Doty Lookout Cache
We're a bit dotty about lookout caches. Logbear
really has a fascination with forest fire lookouts and my
interested lies in geocaching. Of course, we've both loved the
views. We finished the
Washington Forest Fire Lookout Challenge together, but we still
continue to seek new lookout caches to visit or place. This is one
of those places. Coincidentally, it expresses our 'Doty-ness' in
its name, and it happens to be between the upper forks of Dunn
Creek.
Doty Lookout, at an elevation of nearly 2100', was a Washington
Division of Forestry (DNR since 1957) lookout constructed in 1942.
It consisted of a 28' pole tower cab(in?) and a house. It was
destroyed in 1966. Today, all that remains are remnants that have
been pushed into the woods. But the view . . . oh, the view! We
could see Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and (we
think) Mt. Baker either from the top, or on the walk up.
About this cache:
- Auto routing may take you beyond where you'll need to
park.
- An easy walk (with a gentle grade) of about .8 mile will get
you to the lookout site and within spitting distance of the cache.
Park at the gate and don't block it. If the gate happens to be
open, you take your chances as there was some mud on the seemingly
seldom used road.
- You're looking for a 30 cal ammo can.
- Bring your camera. We didn't have an absolutely clear day, but
the views were still stunning. IMHO, the end of the day may be
best.
Please let me know if there are any
problems with the cache or the coords. Have
fun!
