Geocache Description:

Ted Gilbert Lookout

If you're looking for a beautiful view of Mt. St. Helens that is far from the maddening crowd and a little off the beaten track, this might be the cache for you. Your passenger vehicle should be able to bring you here without a problem -- you and your family, your critter (of course, pick up after it!), and your picnic lunch. The extra bonus is that it is a lookout cache, and will qualify for Washington Forest Fire Lookout Challenge. :-)

Ted Gilbert Lookout, a Department of Natural Resources forest fire lookout, was built in 1963. It was a forty foot live-in tower made of wood. Sadly, an internet search failed to turn up just who Ted Gilber was and why he had a lookout named after him. Three years prior to the eruption of Mount Saint Helens (1980) the lookout was sold to a private party and removed. Another source says that this lookout was actually destroyed in 1980's eruption, but photos on Rex's Forest Fire Lookout Pages seem to indicate otherwise. Whatever the story, little remains of the lookout. We may have found some found some foundation remnamts while we were there, but that is all.

However, the changed but equally gorgeous view is still there.

About this cache
  • We were able to drive to within a tenth of a mile of where we placed the cache. Keep in mind that the gates may be closed and locked and you will have to walk a mile or so.
  • You are looking for a 30 cal. ammo can. This is not meant to be a hard hide.
  • We actually placed this cache in January of 2010. At the time, there was a trace (literally!) of snow on the ground, and none on the road. It has been a most unusual :-( year for snow and conditions may have changed since we placed it. Do not assume you will be able to access the cache now. The cache is at about 4100' elevation. Most winters, there would be many feet of snow between you and this cache.

Please let me know if there are any problems with the cache or the coords. Have fun!
