The Poker Tree

The story of Bailie Nichol Jarvie is immortalised in Sir Walter Scott's historical novel Rob Roy. Whether true or construction it is a good tale nevertheless.

Upon entering a Highland Inn, the good Bailie, a respected Glasgow magistrate and Rob Roy MacGregor's cousin, came under threat from a wild, sword wielding Highlander. Finding his own blade rusted to its scabbard through disuse, he seized a red hot poker from the hearth and with great presence of mind, rather than disfigure his opponent, set fire to his 'bonnie plaid'. Unnecessary bloodshed was thus avoided, yet honour was satisfied.

In memory of the 'Guid Bailie's' exploits, the iron poker was later hung from the branches of the old oak tree that stood outside the inn, and became a tourist attraction. Some years ago the poker was taken away for safe keeping and at one time was thought to be lost. It has now returned to hang from the branches of this wonderful oak. It has a write up in the wonderful book "The Heritage Trees of Scotland" - an essential read for tree enthusiasts as RB pointed out in his log.

Congratulations to Fred2 as the first to brave the protector of this cache at its original location
