This is the fifteenth cache of a series of caches called "The Heart
Of Oak Series". These caches are named after ships that have
connections to the greater Saint John Area, either built here at
the Saint John Shipbuilding Yard, or that have names similar to
areas around Saint John.
This cache is a little different from the others of the series.
This cache is not named after any ship of the Canadian Navy or the
Royal Navy, rather after the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps that
resides in the KV. Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps BRAS d'OR was
formed in 1979, under the unit number 268. The unit was formed in
Quispamsis, New Brunswick, and trained in Lakefield Elementary
School. BRAS d'OR was named for the ships HMCS BRAS d'OR, the first
being a Second World War auxilliary minesweeper, the second HMCS
BRAS d'OR was commissioned in 1968 was an experimental Fast
Hydrofoil Escort. Both ships are named for Bras d'Or Lake, Cape
Breton, where Alexander Graham Bell launched his first hydrofoil
craft in 1919. The unit has had a long history in the KV, it was
formed due to the large amount of KV youth travelling in town to
RCSCC RODNEY. The unit was formed in 1979 it has trained in two
locations Lakefield Elementary from '79 to '06 from there they
moved to the Fairvale Outing Assc. The unit is involved in numerous
community activities from tagging with the Legion, highway clean
up, serving at senior dinners and numerous other activities.
