This cache has been archived.

Mountainfolk.: Last find was in 2012. Apparently, no-one is interested in adventure caching anymore, so this is being archived.

Geocache Description:

This cache is a tribute to our friend, Redtailforester. This caching team introduced us to this crazy sport a couple years ago. Since then, our geo-addiction has compelled us to travel all over the state in search of those elusive smileys.

Lately our interest has moved in the direction of high terrain rated caches. Eastern PA has a plethora of these along with a group of cachers that are up to the challenge. We thought it was time to introduce this style of caching to Central PA. This is the first of a series of terrain five caches we will be placing this spring.

Since Redtailforester is a private forester by trade and is currently attending Penn State for his masters degree in forestry, we thought a few tree climbs would make nice stages for this multi-cache. If anyone can identify the trees, please do so because all we know is that they are very TALL!

Our geocaching group in the State College area is a close knit group and we have been known to "poke" a bit of fun at each other. One fine example of this is pictured below:

Nice Hit!

If you become a bit frustrated when attempting this cache, please poke the "Red Squirrel". It is his fault that Mountainfolk406 got into this caching game in the first place!

Redtailforester.

The following cartoon is a bit of an inside joke that popped up on Facebook during a discussion of this cache. Feel free to ask the "Red Squirrel" what it all means. For some reason, he finds no humor in it.....

CACHE DESCRIPTION

All stages are terrain five. Here is a list of recommended equipment needed to safely complete this cache:

  • Rope Ascending / Rappelling Gear and the Knowledge On How To Use It
  • 150 ft Static Rope (Please use approved lifeline, not hardware rope)
  • Line Launch Device
  • Binoculars
  • Helmet and Gloves
  • An Early Start
  • A Team Approach is Highly Recommended
  • Cameras. (Posting spoiler photos of cachers obtaining the stages is encouraged)
  • A Sense of Humor

You can attempt to reach the stages how ever you wish, but chainsaws and firearms are NOT approved special equipment to complete this cache!

Now for the disclaimers: This cache is not recommended for small children unless you are a member of the e-r-h team. Difficult terrain and vertical exposure will be encountered. Attempting this cache is completely under the cacher's discretion. Mountainfolk406 takes no responsibility for anything that may happen while seeking this cache including injury or death. Please be safe and only attempt to reach the containers if you accept the risk. Please DO NOT attempt this cache if you do not have the correct gear and/or the ability to use it properly and safely. Changing over from ascending to rappel while suspended in the air will be required. Have this technique wired before going up. Also, please assure you are only attached to safe anchors both topside and on the ground. Team caching is highly recommended. Lastly, please wear a helmet if climbing or working in the "drop zone".

If this cache is not something you wish to attempt, Geocaching.com has provided an "Ignore Listing" option. Please use this option if this listing bothers you. Hate the game, not the player.

(If finders believe this cache is overrated, the scales will be adjusted. We just don't want to sandbag anyone.) ;-)

Note: Do not hike in this or any other State Game Lands during the big game hunting seasons in November and December, except on Sundays during which hunting is not permitted in Pennsylvania. The State Game Lands also allow small game hunting during much of the rest of the year, which does not present a serious hazard to hikers, though it is advisable to wear at least one piece of safety orange clothing for visibility.
