MORILLON SKI- IN : La Croix des 7 Freres
Lieu presque mythique de la région. Une appellation, en tout cas, qui a toujours fasciné les gens du pays, soulevé l’interrogation des visiteurs. Pourquoi un tel nom, les « sept frères » ?
Trois légendes courent sur ce lieu. A vous de choisir. Ou d’en proposer une autre…
La première rappellerait le souvenir de Saint Bruno et des ses six compagnons qui, en 1084, fondèrent l’Ordre de la Grande Chartreuse en Dauphiné. Avant d’essaimer dans bien d’autres lieux retirés du monde. Dont au Reposoir, à vingt kilomètres d’Arâches, où le Bienheureux Jean d’Espagne fonda une Chartreuse (maintenant Carmel). Est-ce que fut envisagée ici une semblable implantation ? Peut-être. Ce serait la première explication ; mais sans aucun début de preuve…
La seconde perpétuerait le souvenir d’un drame noué là, au-dessus des " abysmes" dominant la vallée du Giffre. Dans les temps anciens et par un terrible hiver, un jeune garçon s’aventura sur la crête ; lorsque la corniche de neige s’effondra sous son poids, il disparut avec elle dans la pente. Et ses six frères, en retrouvant son corps et voulant le secourir, connurent le même sort et s’unirent à lui au-delà de la mort blanche.
Quant à la troisième, elle témoigne d’une réalité paysanne indéniable : l’importance du sol et de la propriété. Là-haut, sur ces alpages, vivait une famille de sept enfants. Tous solides gaillards, ces sept frères, durs en labeur, défrichant la forêt pour gagner en pâtures. Sous l’autorité paternelle d’un patriarche. Mais lorsque celui-ci mourut, ses sept fils se déchirèrent, aucun ne voulant s’aliéner une parcelle de bien au profit des six autres ! Et leur affrontement fut d’une violence biblique ! Car c’est à grands coups de cognées de bûcheron qu’ils luttèrent, en une mêlée confuse ! L’un tomba, puis un autre, un troisième… Le combat continua jusqu’à ce qu’il n’en reste qu’un, le dernier des sept frères. Ivre d’orgueil, il se dressa alors sur le sommet et brandit vers le ciel sa hache rougie du sang de ses frères, les bras grands ouverts, en croix. Un éclair gigantesque jaillit alors de la nuée et le foudroya. Dieu avait fait justice…
Et si aucune de ces légendes ne vous convient, ralliez-vous alors à une explication géographique : Il y a 200 ans, sur cette hauteur, s’étendait un alpage. Donc nulle forêt comme maintenant. De ce fait la vue s’étendait au loin et on pouvait voir sept clochers. Voilà d’où viendrait le nom des Sept Frères.
