A 30 caliber ammo can in California Hill State Forest approximately a mile from parking area.
In 2007 three different protected areas were merged into a single unit, the California Hill State Forest. We've wondered for a while what is out here and finally had the opportunity to explore and place some caches. Much of the area shows signs of human intrusion, yet the forest has some beautiful topography and large areas that are unspoiled or at least not recently spoiled.
There are no marked trails in the state forest but there are a number of woods roads/trails that show evidence of prior heavy use. While these do not generally run straight, we found that it was not difficult to find a combination of roads/trails that would take us in the direction we wanted to go.
This cache is located not far off such a road/trail at the top of a long hill at the far end of the state forest. The hike from the parking coordinates to the cache is a bit longer than a mile. The cache is a 30 caliber ammo can hidden in what should be an easy to find location. The cache is not explicitly marked as snow friendly, but the hint should be sufficient to make it possible to find the cache with only modest excavation in even heavy snow cover.
The state forest is heavily used during hunting season . We recommend that you do not attempt to find this cache during deer hunting season.
