Popolopen Troll Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Walkin' Ed: I went in to remove this cache today since the permit has expired, but it was gone. I spoke to the New York-New Jersey Trail crew that was assembling the new bridge (2 of whom were geocachers) but they hadn't seen it. Apparently the park personnel removed it when they were working on the supports for the new bridge.

Geocache Description:

The footbridge crossing the brook was repeatedly washed out. A section of the last bridge can be seen upstream from the cache. The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference volunteers built the existing bridge which was designed to stand up to almost anything nature could throw at it. It took most of a whole summer to build. During construction workers crossed the brook on a high line. A steel cable was strung across the brook. Workers would don a safety harness and clip onto the cable with a carabineer and then fly across the brook. What a way to get to work!

Hurricane Irene has struck this bridge again but the cache is still here. The hike to the cache is now a 3 mile round trip from Fort Montgomery. Park at the Fort Montgomery Visitor Center on Route 9W and follow the 1779 trail under the road. Follow the signs to the West Redoubt and then back to Rte. 9W. Cross the Popolopen Creek on the highway, then follow the Popolopen Gorge trail to the cache.

The cache is a lock and lock container. Please hide it as well as you found it.
