This was originally built as a Congregationalist chapel in the 1870's.
The old building can be seen behind the modern frontage.
Although one of the smaller mainstream denominations, the United Reformed Church (URC) plays a dynamic and challenging part in the British Christian community. It has brought together English Presbyterians, English, Welsh and Scottish Congregationalists, and members of the Churches of Christ, through unions in 1972, 1981 and 2000, the title URC being used from 1973 on. One hundred thousand people make up 1600 congregations, with nearly 800 ministers, paid and unpaid.
The first Congregationalist meeting house in this area was completed in nearby Stowmarket in 1719, followed by a much grander chapel in 1861.
This was raised to the ground by a lone German bomber in 1941.
Branch chapels were built in several local villages, of which this at Stowupland is one of several remaining.
