This is the short tale of three valiant soldiers who perished in the deep snow in 1853.They where private George Driver and Patrick Carlin from the 7th regiment of Royal fusiliers.A corporal Joseph Penton met them at Roborough who had struggled down the 10 miles from Princetown through horrendous conditions to escort the two privates back.In atrocious conditions they struggled on encountering snow drifts up to there armpits.On reaching Devils bridge private Driver and Carlin tried to return to Dousland,sadly there frozen bodies where found at a spot called Double Waters.The following day corporal Pentons body was found near Soldiers Pond 200yds short then the Duchy hotel.Tragically he could not manage that final short distance to safety.All three soldiers received full military honours .They were buried in a communal grave in Princetown churchyard,it can be located at the back of St Michaels church and is marked with a slate memorial.The cache is a small clip box with a log and enough room for TBs and geocoins.
