Geocache Description:

A cache and dash in a historic part of Weymouth. Please bring a pen/pencil to sign the log.

Beware of the Muggles this is a very popular area especially during the holidays. There is plenty of outdoor seating for the nearby restuarants and pubs. The Brewers quay complex was home to the former Devenish Brewery. The historic building is closed and being redeveloped .

Up until near the end of the eighteenth century the old harbour of Weymouth, formerly known as Ope Cove (from which Hope Square gets its name), had a larger inlet here. The inlet ran (until major reclamation in 1781) up to where the Red Lion public house stands today.

For those who have completed our Crabchurch Conspiracy cache, or who are interested in Civil wall history the inlet (known by some as the Black Hole) was the location where over 200 Irish mercenaries perished. They retreated from high ground on the night of February 27 1645, pursued by the parliamentarians and in confusion, blind panic and disarray plunged into the freezing depths.....it is said some of the bodies remain to this day under the nearby streets.

In the stone wall above the cache is a dent probably from a cannonball fired from the Chapelhay fort during this period Our 'arbour View cache (GC2FRM9) is nearby.

There is a little token for FTF ;o)

Happy Caching...
