Geocache Description:

This is a simple cache a short walk from Kaleen High.

Just a simple cache for my first hide. You're looking for a small Sistema container with log book and pencil.

Bells in Lawson is hidden at the entrance to what used to be the Belconnen Naval Transmitting Station or "Bells" as it was affectionately known. This station originally comprised of 3, 183 metre (600 foot) towers and a number of buildings to house equipment and the people who worked onsite. Construction work on the site began in 1938-1939. The site was chosen as it was considered to be less vulnerable to invasion than other sites in the Pacific region. The station was officially opened on the 20th April 1939 and the first transmission was sent on the 22nd of December. At its peak the station had 38 high frequency transmitters, one low frequency transmitter, three towers and approximately 44 other antennae. Some of the buildings were removed in the late 1980's as people moved into the growing suburbs nearby. The station ended transmissions on the 1st June 2005 and the towers were demolished on the 20th December 2006. To bring down the towers some of the guy wires were cut and the weight of the remaining wires pulled the towers down onto the surrounding grassland.

The Belconnen Naval Transmitting Station was also used to relay results from the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne to the rest of the world.

The cache should be away from where any student muggles would be. You may want to keep an eye on the nearby bus stop and traffic when approaching and leaving GZ.

While you can park practically on top of this cache, I'd recommend parking in the car park at the school and using the underpass at the entrance/northern end of the car park. The road can get pretty busy at times.

You do not need to cross the fence line to find the cache.
