Geocache Description:

Baden Powells' Brownsea Island

Brownsea Island was the location for the first Scout Camp run by Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The island (approx 1km x 2km) is now owned by The National Trust, part of which is managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust.

Details of Scout & Guide camps on the island may be found here.

2007 is the hundredth anniversary year of the first Scout Camp and there are several events planned as a celebration, you can find the details here.

Please note: The island will be closed to the general public for the day on 1st August 2007.

To get to the island it is necessary to take a ferry boat from Poole Quay or Sandbanks. Sadly, none of these vessels are truly wheelchair accessible, although the satff are usually very willing to help passengers.

Expect to pay a landing fee upon arrival at the island, if you are a National Trust member, bring your membership card for exemption.

Only Registered Assistance Dogs are allowed onto the island.

The island has several waymarked trails and is a nature reserve. The part of the island managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust is a bird sanctuary.

Please be respectful of the surroundings on the island, please do not feed the wildlife, even if they ask! Keep you eyes open for unusual species of birds, the rare Red Squirrel, dragon & damselflies, reptiles and so on.

There is a tearoom, National Trust Shop and toilets available on the island. There is so much exploring available, including lovely sandy sheltered beaches, it makes a super day out.
