Geocache Description:

On the way to TOUCH traditional cache – we came across this wonderful example of an exposed fold.

Nearby folding

This part of the earth is located along the area where the Arabian Plate meets the Eurasian Plate. As the various tectonic plates around the earth move and collide, the surface of the earth is subjected to tremendous forces. Tension, compression and shear forces can be exerted in these zones.

Simple folds such as synclines and anticlines are formed by compression forces – i.e. horizontal force similar to pushing a flat piece of paper from two sides while it is on a table top. Buckling (or folding) occurs in this simple “up and down” wave form.

Fold names

In order to substantiate your visit and be able to claim this Earthcache, a number of questions need to be answered and submitted to the cache developer, via e-mail.

You should also post a photograph on the site with your log of your GPSr near GZ.

1. Describe the fold you see at this spot. Is it a syncline or an aniticline?

2. How would you imagine how this fold was formed?

3. Why is the rock in the fold different colours (layers)?

NOTE: You may log your visit prior to approval, but e-mail submissions that do not meet the above criteria will be deleted.
