And They're Racing- Kingston Racing Remembered III Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Earthbound Chief: Big things are happening at this little park. The cache has gone along with the garden it was hiding in. Lots of new structures going up, including fab new playground. Have archived this one as it definitely cannot go back in its original position. Lots of potential new spots but we will wait until all the work has been completed before reinventing this cache.

Geocache Description:

This is the third in our series of 'Kingston Racing Remembered'. Another racecourse, another story...The featured race at the inaugural meeting at Mentone Racecourse on the 8th September, 1888 was the Mentone Cup. It was run over a mile and a quarter. The course was considered to be classy, excellent in the wet due to the sandy loam. The proximity to the beach for the locally trained horses was also an advantage. The racecourse was developed as the area around Mentone grew. Rationalisation cut backs made by the VRC over the years took a toll on all the local tracks. Mentone's final meet was in July of 1948. The track was used for training purposes until 1972 when it was sold and redeveloped as the Mentone Racecourse Housing Estate. The home sites were auctioned off requiring a $750 deposit with the balance due in 3 years. This reserve is all that remains. You are looking for a 2 litre sistema, please rehide well. You have to not only look out for muggles in this park but you will be watched closely by the wildlife.
Please be aware: some species of water fowl will defend their babes quite vigorously if you get too close. Otherwise they are quite curious and will only be interested in you if you have something to eat as the locals around the park feed them.
