L’Île Saint Honorat a une longue de 1 500 m et large de 600 m. Juste après Marmoutier/ Tours (372/375) le monastère était constitué par Honorat d’Arles (Saint Honorat) vers 400/410. Pendant son visite en Égypte et en Syrie il a prix connaissance de l’apparition du monachisme et il a formé le dessein d’être un modèle et vivre comme ermite dans la monde occidental. Pour cela l’Île Saint Honorat est considéré comme origine de la monachisme en Europe. Un ancien évêque très connue de la monastère est Saint Patrick (patron irlandais). Aujourd’hui il y a 30 moines qui cultivent la vigne et produisent de la liqueur de grande qualité. On peut les acheter dans une petite boutique à côté de l’entrée.
The isle of „Saint Honorat“ is approximately 1.5 kilometers in length (East to West) and 400 meters wide. After Marmoutier/ Tours (built 372/375) this is the second monastery in france. It was founded by Saint Honoratus around the year 410. During his visit of Egypt and Syria he got an insight of the initiation of the monasticism. He decided to live like an hermit because he wanted to act as a role model fort the western civilization. Therefore the isle of „Saint Honorat“ is called the cradle of the western monasticism. One of the ancient bishops of the isle is very well knows as „Saint Patrick“ the patron saint of Ireland. Today there are 30 monks living on the monastery. They grow wine and producing liqueur of high quality. You will find a shop next to the entry of the abbey.
Die „Île Saint Honorat“ hat eine Länge von 1,5 Kilometern und eine Breite von 600 Metern. Als erstes Kloster in Frankreich gilt Marmoutier bei Tours - eine Gründung des heiligen Martin in den Jahren 372/375. Doch bereits um 400/410 gründete Honoratus von Arles in der Einsamkeit der Lériner Inseln das hiesige Kloster. Er hatte bei Reisen nach Ägypten und Syrien die dortigen Anfänge des Mönchtums kennengelernt und den Plan gefasst, in seiner westlichen Heimat nach diesem Vorbild als Eremit zu leben. Die Insel gilt daher als die Keimzelle des westlichen Mönchstums. Ein bekannter Bischof dieses Inselklosters war der Heilige Patrick, der spätere Schutzpatron der Iren. Heute leben im Kloster etwa 30 Mönche, die unter anderem hervorragenden Wein und Likör herstellen. Im angrenzenden Geschäft werden diese Produkte verkauft.
