The Meeker Street Walk Bridge
The Galena River Trail is located on the East side of the Galena River. The Galena Downtown area is on the west side of the River. Vehicles use the US 20 Bridge to cross the river. Pedestrians and bicycles can also cross the US 20 Bridge, but they have more options. There is the Green Street Walk Bridge that crosses from the dike to Grant Park. It is a beautiful bridge but not good for bikes because there are steps.
This cache will take you to Meeker Street Walk Bridge. It has ramps for bicycle and wheel chair access. Historically both Green Street and Meeker Street had bridges that carried vehicles across the river, but not in my lifetime. I have seen pictures. The Galena River Floods removed both of those bridges and all the old train bridges too. Ice floes and strong current pack a lot of power.
The bridge that is here now is not the bridge of my youth. The current Aluminum bridge was placed in 2012. The approach was also updated making for easy bridge access by foot or bike. Magnets do not stick to aluminum.
