LE CHATEAU RUINE DU MONT JOVIS

Montjaux vient du latin "Mont Jovis" qui signifie le "Mont Jupiter". Il y aurait eu sur le sommet de la montagne un temple ou oppidum consacré au culte de Jupiter.
Montjaux se situe à la frontière du Lévézou et des Grands Causses. La commune composée de plusieurs villages, hameaux et fermes isolées, commence au bord du plateau du Lévézou à 1100m d'altitude et plonge vers les vallées de la Muse et du Tarn à 340m d'altitude.
Deux châteaux sont sur la commune. Le plus ancien se situe sur la hauteur qui surplombe le village. A l'origine, il s'agissait d'une place forte gauloise, puis romaine, avant qu'un château y fût construit. Il n'en reste rien si ce n'est quelques ruines et des souterrains cachés.
Il fut propriété des comtes de Rodez puis d'une famille de Montjaux qui le céda aux Prévinquières au XVIième siècle.

Montjaux comes from Latin "Mont Jovis" who means the " Jupiter's Mountain ". There would have been on the summit of the mountain a temple or an oppidum dedicated to the cult of Jupiter.
Montjaux is situated on the border of Lévézou and the Big Causses. The municipality consisted of several villages, hamlets and isolated farms, begins at the edge of the "plateau of Lévézou" in 1100m of height and dishwashing towards the valleys of the Muse and the Tarn in 340m of height.
Two castles are on the "Commune". The oldest is situated on the height which overhangs the village. Originally, it was about a Gallic fortified town, then Roman, before a castle is built there. There is nothing if it is not some ruins and hidden underground passages.
It was property of the counts of Rodez then a family of Montjaux which gave up it to Prévinquières in the XVIth century.
