Great Southern Road - Paddys

The Main Roads Management Act of June 1858 declared the Great
Southern Road, from near Sydney through Goulburn and Gundagai to
Albury, as one of the three main roads in the colony. Today we know
it as the Hume Highway, named after Hamilton Hume the travelling
partner of William Hovell on there overland journey from Appin
(near Campbelltown) to Port Phillip and return in 1824.
Over the years the road has seen many realignments, some minor
and some major with entire towns being bypassed. So I thought that
I would do a series of caches based on the old sections of the
Great Sothern Road. This is the second one.
There are two options to access points to this cache, both are
listed below as waypoints.
Cache is located on an old section of the Hume Hwy. After you
have found the cache take the time to have a think about just how
much better the Highway is these days. Stand in the middle of the
old road and look North at the blind corner, just imagine two semi
trailers passing at this point. You will notice that you are in a
dip in the road that these days would have been levelled out so as
to offer the modern motorist a smooth safe journey. Just removing
this dip would make the corner not quite so dangerous…….
