Fishin' and Critters Traditional Geocache
WildlifeLady: This was a fun cache for folks but due to excessive flooding this year of the Little Snake River, the cache was under water for some time, and the cache box is full of mud and crud, so am discontinuing it.

Altitude is 5707 ft. Terrain is rocky but not difficult. Just be careful because there are lots of loose rocks which could cause you to slip.
It was this area where men such as Kit Carson, Colonel John Fremont, Major John Wesley Powell and explorers walked, rode, hunted and fished, charted and mapped these lands. Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and his gang, the “Wild Bunch”, rode and fled from posses. This country was the rendezvous of cattle rustlers and hardy early ranchers. The introduction of sheep from Wyoming was met with stiff resistance in this area by cattlemen, many of whom had the largest spreads in Northwest Colorado.
There is a USGS gauging station here. The cache is not AT or ON any of the USGS equipment so please do NOT disturb any of this. Lots of hunters and fishermen camp/fish here and the bridge which crosses the Little Snake River is very historical. In the heat of the summer, please do not be tempted to get out into the Little Snake River to cool off. There is a lot of quicksand in this area. The Little Snake meanders down and meets up with the Yampa River in Lily Park.
The cache is in a clear Gladwear container with a blue interlocking lid. It contains:

* Neon colored fishing hooks - New in package
* "Rattlin' Spoon" fishing Lure, New in package
* Travel Bug named "Fishin' and Critters"
The travel bug wants to go everywhere he can possibly go, and be put into caches that have something to do with critters, wildlife or fishing.
The road you see on the EAST side of the bridge, going South is not maintained but easy to drive when it is dry. It is extremely nasty to travel if it is wet. I suppose you could consider it a bench road in places, since it snakes around with drop offs to the Little Snake River below.
The other end of it ends in Lily Park and has a sign stating that it is a 4x4 road only. You can not drive fast on this road but you wouldn't want to. The scenery is awesome and you never know when you will see deer, elk, coyotes, fox or Mountain Lion. The road is a county road and I drive it all the time. If it is possible, please have a topo map with you and do not trespass on Cross Mountain Ranch property. It is pretty well marked though with signs. However, a great deal of this area is BLM - public property.
