To find this cache, I suggest parking at the end of the gravel road that follows the Hammersley Fork off of PA 144 between the towns of Cross Fork and Hammersley Fork. Just after parking at the end of the gravel road, it will be necessary to wade across the creek which is about knee deep.
Other access trails are also available. A Susquehannock State Forest map would be helpful in locating the trails. To get a map, call the State Forest District Headquarters at 814-274-3600.
The trail to the cache is moderate for the first half and follows an old dirt road along the Hammersley Fork. The second half is a steep climb and follows the Beech Bottom Trail along Beech Bottom Run. The cache is located in a stand of old-growth hemlocks that escaped being cut at the turn of the century because of a boundary dispute between two logging operations. While you're there, please wander around and enjoy the rare quiet and beauty of the big trees.
