The cache is easy to find in the beautiful surroundings by Ulriksdal Palace
Praktfullt beläget vid Edsvikens strand ligger Ulriksdal.
Ulriksdals slott i Solna uppfördes omkring år 1640 för en av landets mäktigaste män, riksmarsken Jacob De la Gardie.
Efter byggherren kom slottet ursprungligen att heta Jacobsdal. Slottsbyggnaden, som uppfördes i renässansstil, har till det yttre genomgått ett flertal omfattande ombyggnationer. Under första hälften av 1700-talet fick det slutligen sitt nuvarande utseende.
Stormaktstiden
Från det De la Gardieska Jacobsdal utgick drottning Kristinas storslagna kröningsprocession 1650. På Ulriksdal visas den kröningsvagn som drottningen då nyttjade.
År 1669 inköptes slottet av riksänkedrottning Hedvig Eleonora. År 1684 skänkte Hedvig Eleonora slottet till sin nyfödde sonson prins Ulrik och slottets namn kom då att ändras till Ulriksdal.
Efter ett år avled den lille prinsen och hans farmor återtog äganderätten men det nya namnet kom att behållas.
1700-talet
Vid 1700-talets mitt disponerades slottet av kung Adolf Fredrik och drottning Lovisa Ulrika. Vid denna tid inreddes en slottsteater i det gamla beridarhuset. Teatern kom att få namnet Confidencen. I dag är Confidencen en uppskattad sommarteater.
Från invalidinrättning till kungligt hem
År 1821 inrättades, efter franskt mönster, en invalid-inrättning i den gamla slottsbyggnaden. Tjugofem år senare blev Ulriksdal åter ett kungligt hem.
Kronprinsparet, Karl (XV) och Lovisa, samlade aktivt möbler och konsthantverk från bland annat renässansen och Ulriksdal kom att förvandlas till ett museihem. Delar av dessa museala inredningar kan alltjämt ses på slottet.
Åren 1864–65 lät kung Karl XV och drottning Lovisa uppföra ett slottskapell efter ritningar av arkitekten Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander.
Gustaf VI Adolf och drottning Louise
Ulriksdal förknippas i hög grad med kung Gustaf VI Adolf och drottning Louise. Från deras tid har det berömda vardagsrummet från 1923 bevarats.
Inredningen var en bröllopsgåva från Stockholms befolkning och möblerna ritades av Carl Malmsten. Vardagsrummet tillhör landets förnämsta inredningar från detta århundrade.
I slottets södra flygel har Världsnaturfonden WWF sitt kontor.

Ulriksdal Palace, magnificently situated on the shores of Edsviken, was built 1639–45 for General Jacob De la Gardie. The architect was Hans Jacob Kristler, and the palace was originally called Jacobsdal after its first owner.
The Queen’s favourite
Jacobsdal quickly became a popular destination for royalty and members of the nobility. Queen Kristina was a frequent guest. The Queen and De la Gardie shared an interest in theatre, with the result that they had a pleasure garden built in front of the palace, providing a setting for royal drama performances. Queen Kristina was so fond of the palace that she chose it as the starting point of her coronation procession in 1650.
Jacobsdal becomes Ulriksdal
Later in the 17th century, the palace and gardens were improved and extended. In 1669 they became the property of Queen Hedvig Eleonora. It was during her time that the palace was renamed Ulriksdal..
Orangery with sculptures and exotic plants
In 1705 an orangery was built next to the palace, providing winter storage for the exotic plants from the grounds, which included lemon, orange, Seville orange and fig trees. Today, a number of classical sculptures from various periods are beautifully arranged among exotic plants. The orangery has been a sculpture museum since 1988.
Encounters with different eras
A walk around Ulriksdal Palace provides a fascinating insight into interior decoration from the 17th to the 20th century. Visitors can see rooms with 19th-century baroque pastiche interiors next to rooms with rather more functional furnishings from the 1920s. The highlights include the living room designed by Carl Malmsten in the 1920s for Crown Prince Gustaf (VI) Adolf and his wife, Crown Princess Louise..
Several of the rooms on show were created for King Karl XV by Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander.
Beautiful walks in the grounds
Ulriksdal Palace is beautifully situated on Edsviken bay in Solna, just north of Stockholm. The palace grounds and surrounding area offer some beautiful walks. The superb nature and culture trail is not to be missed. The well-tended park with its sculptures and fountains is the perfect setting for a picnic on the lawn.
