The Lielupe (literally: big river) is the second largest river in Latvia. The river forms from the confluence of two smaller rivers, the Musa and the Memele, near Bauska (close to GCXDMK). The Lielupe has a total length of 119 km. Mostly the river flows through flat territory with fertile soils and intensive agriculture. Therefore, relative to its drainage basin area, the Lielupe receives the highest nitrogen and phosphorus load among the large Latvian rivers. The average slope of the river is only 5 – 10 cm/km and in many places the river bed is below the average water level in the Gulf of Riga.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, the Lielupe was an important waterway for the transports of goods, passengers and for floating timber. Today, three bridges across the Lielupe connect Jurmala and Riga, the railway brige, the bridge at Bulduri, and the bridge at GC1FNFB. The railway bridge across the Lielupe originally also served pedestrians and wagons. Later a wooden ponton bridge was constructed across the river parallel to the railway bridge. Only in 1959 the current auto bridge was constructed and the entrance road to Jurmala was moved from Lielupe to Bulduri.

The cache is not located at the road!
