Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small camo'd container with log and a few trinkets for swag placed to commemorate one of North Carolina's claims to cryptozoological fame!! Please take the time to re-hide it well after you have found it.

Locn Ness, Lake Champlain, Lake Okanagan all have famous monsters, be they real or mytholigical. Lake Norman in the piedmont area of North Carolina can be included in that list as well. Over the years hundreds, perhaps thousands, of witnesses have reported SOMETHING, large and menacing, lurking the depths of this lake. The identity of what the locals have dubbed "Normie" remains a mystery. Opinion varies from an Alligator, to a giant catfish, to the classic humped sea serpent. One thing that makes the Lake Norman monster unique among lake monsters is that it is one of the few monsters that lives within a man-made lake.

The following was reprinted from the website unknownexplorer.com:

Lake Norman was created by Duke Power in 1963 as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam. It is the largest man made lake in North Carolina and offers 520 miles of shoreline along with a surface area of more than 32,500 acres. Lake Norman powers the hydroelectric station at Cowans Ford and is used by Marshall Steam Station and McGuire Nuclear Station to cool the steam that drives their turbines. The lake also supplies water to Lincoln County, Mooresville, Charlotte, Davidson and Hunterville.

Lake Norman is also reported to be home to a large unknown creature the locals have dubbed Normie. Descriptions of Normie vary from sighting to sighting and range from a crocodilian like creature to the more classic three humped serpent, though most that have seen the Lake Norman Monster seem to agree that the beast is more fish like, with a slender body, thick whisker like appendages, flippers and a ragged looking dorsal fin. Speculation includes mutations to existing fish from the nuclear power plant nearby. Legendary Lake Monster investigator, and founder of the Global Underwater Search Team, GUST, Jan Ove Sunberg, has even expressed interest in the Lake Norman Monster.

So after you have found this cache, take a good, long, look across the lake. Perhaps you will see something large, a dark shadow in the water that no one can explain. The website www.lakenormanmonster.com invites witnesses to add their stories. It's an intersting read. Possibly you can add to this ever-growing list after you have found this cache.
