Geocache Description:

Welcome to Lal Lal - a small township set between the shadows of Mt Buninyong and Mt Doran.

Only 20 minutes drive from Ballarat, Lal Lal boasts a history of gold, coal, kaolin and iron mines, hotels, breweries, a famous racecourse, brickwork's and a bluestone railway station with a nearby water tower and pumping station.

The bluestone water tower was built in 1861 to service the Geelong/Ballarat railway line. Water was drawn from the now swampy dam area at the rear of the tower, and pumping equipment (no longer present) below the tank was used to fill the tank and supply steam trains on the nearby track.

The tank, which is in very good condition for its age, can be inspected by climbing the attached ladder - but you do not need to leave ground level to find this cache. Caching tools may be of assistance, but please ensure that the cache is returned to its home and adequately concealed once logged.

You are looking for a micro container, so please bring your own pen.

If you have time, a short distance away are the Lal Lal Falls. Here water drops thirty metres into a gorge formed by the collapse of a lava tunnel. The Aborigine's believed that Bunjil, their creator, lived here. Water from the falls runs to the Lal Lal reservoir, being held back by the Bungal Dam which supplies both Ballarat and Geelong with water. Other caches are also nearby awaiting your discovery.
