Moinhos de Canais
Ao longo do Guadiana foram instaladas diversos tipos de armadilhas, os caneiros, para capturar peixes migradores onde, aproveitando os açudes, os pescadores colocavam ao longo do rio fileiras de canas que encaminhavam os peixes para um local onde facilmente podiam ser capturados. Hoje em dia este tipo de práticas não são permitidas e esta foi a última no Concelho de Mértola a ser desmantelada.
Apesar de em tempos terem sido capturadas toneladas de peixes, como o Sável (Alosa alosa), nestas armadilhas dos Canais, nem tudo é negativo relativamente ao seu açude. O açude que acompanha os moinhos cria uma área de remanso onde a lontra (Lutra lutra) se alimenta. Portugal tem uma grande responsabilidade na conservação desta espécie, uma vez que é o único país europeu que apresenta uma população estável ao contrário dos restantes, onde se verifica uma regressão acentuada.
A cache
Está num local de fácil acesso a toda a família, sem ser necessário descer até ao moinho. No entanto, recomendamos que o façam.
Apesar do nível do terreno, poderá fazer o percurso até cerca de 50 mt da cache em automóvel normal (em dias que não tenha chovido). No entanto, o ideal será um TT ou um carro não muito baixo.
Se optarem por um passeio de bicicleta ou a pé, deixem o carro no largo principal de Corte Gafo de Baixo e sigam as placas que indicam "Moinho de Canais".
ATENÇÃO Por favor, deixem a cache bem camuflada.

Canais Mills - Along the Guadiana river were installed various types of traps, the "caneiros", using the ponds to catch migratory fish, where the fishermen placed, along the river, rows of cane that channeled the fish to a place where they could easily be caught.
Today, such practices are not allowed and this one was the last in the Municipality of Mértola being decommissioned.
Though at times tons of fish were caught, such as
Allis shad (Alosa alosa), in these traps of Canais, not everything is negative for the dam. The weir within the mills creates an area of stable waters where the
otter (Lutra lutra) is nourished. Portugal has a great responsibility in the conservation of this species, since it is the only European country which provides a stable population unlike the others, where there is a marked decline.
The cache
The cache is in a place of easy access to the entire family. It is not necessary to go down to the mill but we reccomend a visit.
Despite the terrain level, you can drive to 50 meters from the cache (on dry weather). Ideally you should use a 4x4 or a car with high suspensions.
If you choose to walk or ride a bike, leave the car at the main square of Corte Gafo de Baixo and follow the signs saying "Moinho de Canais"
