In Ille-sur-Têt you can get into a little valley, where the so-called "Orgues" rise over the land.
These are remnants of columnar rocks that have withstood the weather and soar like organ pipes (cheminées des fées) into the sky.
These remnants, which are also known as Earth-pyramids, can be found here at 2 points ,where only the eastern have an access. It is an impressive mountain basin, with washed walls.
The age of the rock formation is assigned to the Pliocene of the Tertiary."The Orgues" consist of sandstone and clay.
Sandstone and clay are rather soft consistency. Therefore, the weather (the rain and the wind),may well shape the rocks.
At that time the Têt has deposited the material from the Pyrenees at this place and formed a large plateau.
This plateau is washed out by rain since all the years, thereby resulting this rock formation resembling organ pipes.
In the center rises an impressive Pillar , "La Sibylle" called.
