“Paleco” é um termo utilizado pela população Nazarena para designar
os turistas (portugueses) que os visitam, especialmente na época
balnear. O termo deriva da palavra "pileca". No início do Século XX
a grande maioria das pessoas que visitavam a Nazaré eram religiosos
que vinham celebrar as festas da Nossa Senhora de Nazaré.
Deslocavam-se a cavalo ou de carroça, ou seja, em pilecas. A
pronúncia nazarena (pileca, em "nazareno" soa bastante como paleca)
aliada ao humor criou assim este
termo.
“Paleco” is a term
used by the population of Nazare to designate the Portuguese
tourists who visit the city, especially during the summer season.
The term derives from the word “pileca".
At the beginning of the twentieth century the vast majority of
people who visited the Nazare are religious who came to celebrate
the festivals of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré (madonna of Nazareth) and
came on a donkey or horse. The Portuguese term for this is
“Pileca” with the
linguistic characteristics of the region the word sounds
“Paleco”
