Geocache Description:

This is a classic cache, the oldest cache in Gloucester County, hidden October 10, 2001, during the first year of geocaching in New Jersey. If you ever cared to experience caching as it was in “those thrilling days of yesteryear”, come on down to Winslow WMA for this gem.

It is best to park near the former Winslow Fish and Wildlife Management Area gun range off of Piney Hollow Road. (The gun range was closed aprrox. 2009). Follow the un-named sand road to the north until you spot the blue dots trail which will guide your way to the hole. It is not necessary to walk into the woods just follow the road and paths.

The container is now an ammo box placed at the original coordinates. Hide the cache well after you find it to avoid muggles.

NOTE: The place is full of ticks. Make sure you spray yourself with bug spray containing Deet before you venture into the woods-Deep Woods Off will work fine. Wear long pants and long sleeves to protect you against the brush and ticks. It is also very important to check for ticks before you leave and when you get home.

There is light bushwhacking at the end of this trip the cache is located behind the hole on the right hand side (SW).

A word of warning: Be careful when walking on the sandy roadways some people like to fly down the roadway in 4x4s, motorcycles and 4 wheelers. Also, since it is a Wildlife Management Area check the hunting seasons and wear orange or bright colored clothing while out exploring. WMA regs state that "Wildlife Management Areas are closed from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. unless engaged in lawful hunting, fishing or trapping activities. "

The Blue Hole Legend

The legend of Blue Hole was rediscovered recently by a group of old timers in South Jersey. The hole was inaccessible for over 40 years when a flood washed out a bridge over a river and locals soon forgot about the blue swimming hole. Recently the local group found another way to access the hole from East Piney Hollow Road and mapped out a trail and blazed it with blue trail markers.

The Legend states that a meteor hitting the earth created the Blue Hole. Locals say it is bottomless and is where the Jersey Devil drinks water for refreshment, swims and also uses it as a bathtub on a regular basis. Years ago it was said that a group of engineers and scientists brought a large crane to the site and dropped a large weight on steel cable and never hit the bottom of the hole when they ran out of cable.

Parents warned their children never to swim in the hole because if you did the Jersey Devil would pull you to the bottom. A logical explanation would be that since the Blue Hole is spring fed from cold underground springs swimmers would actually cramp up and it would feel like they were being pulled to the bottom. The water temperature of the Blue Hole is said to be in the 50s to 60s even in the hottest part of the summer. The hole is not bottomless because I can see its sandy bottom from the surface. It is reported that the sandy bottom is similar in texture to quicksand. Maybe the hole was a lot deeper years ago and erosion has filled the hole somewhat.”
